The "Phantom Shots" series is a visual continuation of the Iraq war logs, the US army secret files of the Iraq war, which were made public by wikileaks in october 2010.

"Phantom Shots" are a kind of composite sketches. They are based on military documents and visualize the incidents. They show a distorted reality, the same way like composite sketches do, which are created by the memory of witnesses, too.

"Phantom Shots" use hyper aesthetics, which serve as a visual decoy. The beholder, who usually doesn't want to get in touch with this kind of topic, is faced with it in a stronger way, than the common war imagery could.

The 3D aesthetics were chosen to visualize the strong fusion of reality and fiction, which has a big importance in the secret files. Also the 3D aesthetics symbolize the ongoing virtualization of war
(unmanned aerial vehicles, joystick attacks).

"Phantom Shots" are authentic, because they are based on real occurrences. These images play with the conflicting priorities between reality and fiction, surreality, virtuality, truth and falsehood.

The remembrance of texts has less power than that of images. The "Phantom Shots" series extracts a very small part of the 400.000 files (short stories) out of the archive, gives tragedies and individiual fates a face and makes them public at all.
